How to Seal Exterior Brick Walls Stone Veneers
Brick and mortar structures may look solid and impenetrable, but brick stone veneer walls to absorb water, allowing moisture to seep into the home. Mold can begin to grow behind the brick, and unsightly efflorescence can form on the surface. Efflorescence is the deposit of white salts on the surface of the brick as moisture evaporates. Excessive moisture eventually compromises the integrity of unsealed brick walls. Things You’ll Need:
Drop cloths (optional)
Rubber gloves
Stiff-bristled brush or pressure washer
Bucket
Liquid dish detergent
Penetrating sealer
Large paintbrush, thick nap roller or airless sprayer
1. Place drop cloths on the ground below the wall to protect vegetation.
2. Put on rubber gloves. Mix together a few squirts of liquid dish detergent with 3 gallons of warm water, then scrub the wall with a stiff-bristled brush. Remove all grime, efflorescence or moss. Alternatively, clean the brick with a pressure washer on a low setting.
3. Rinse the brick with clear water and allow the exterior to dry for at least 24 hours.
4. Apply the penetrating sealer using a large paintbrush, paint roller with a thick nap, or airless sprayer. Carefully read the manufacturer’s directions. In most cases, sealer should be applied in long, smooth strokes in one direction, then applied in the opposite direction to ensure full and even coverage.
5. Allow the sealer to dry for a minimum of 30 minutes before applying a second coat.
Tips & Warnings
Silane/siloxane water repellent will cover approximately 100 sq. ft. per gallon
Look for penetrating sealers containing silanes or siloxanes, not silicone. Silanes and siloxanes allow water vapor to escape from brick. Silicone-based sealers trap moisture inside of brick, which can lead to flaking and cracking.
